1 roll of film over 1 week with 24 opportunities to capture the indisposable world around you.

I have recently participated in the ‘indisposable concept‘.   A simple photography project to strip back photography, challenge our way of thinking and appreciate the things in our lives that aren’t disposable.

This project proved challenging in many ways I never expected.

• Shooting with film. It has been almost 10 years since I have shot with film! Not working with digital proved challenging. Not being able to immediately see my images was frustrating and cause a surprising amount of anxiety for me. Not being able to check even composition, let alone settings – what settings!!!!!!
• Shooting with a disposable camera with no settings! flash on or off – that is about as far as it goes. Having to trust my judgement about light and flash – you’ll see I got it wrong on more than one occasion. But not even being able to control focus was something that i wasn’t entirely comfortable.
• Only having 24 shots – not wanting to waste them, I was very conservative at the beginning of the week, only take one or two shots a day. Trying to put an appropriate amount of thought into each picture. Not over-thinking it, but considering each subject.
• Having to explain film and disposable camera to my children. This proved interesting. they have nothing that has film, not cassettes, video cassettes, no analogue video cameras or still cameras. They live entirely digital. After trying to explain it, every day I was asked “Is today the day mum, will they smash open your camera today and gt your photos out?”

The images are so far from perfect, but they do bring some comfort to me, in their raw-ness. I have been left inspired. I have dug out the old 35mm SLR,  have purchased a cheaper holga 35mm camera and i am going to buy some film and experiment. Just play.

This project is simple enough – iPhone-ography + daily prompt, keep this manageable for me. I have also been receiving some really great feedback and love for my photos – which helps keep inspired as well.

62/365 #Troublemaker : Birthday celebrations today – the cake was the troubkemaker. I usually like to back but had no time at all this weekend, so I had to resort to a store-bought ice cream cake. The kids loved it.

Miss Molly (my 8yo step-daughter) got my old DSLR today – and what a natural. Once set-up, she was all over the timing, making sure she was poised and ready for the car coming over the crest. Then a few fast shots later and she had 4-6 shots of each car, all focused, composition spot on!

I think I need to foster this natural ability and teach her everything I know.

I started Project Life 365 as a project to inspire my creativity every day. I needed something to prompt me everyday. I needed the process and workflow to be minimal to make sure the challenge of a photo a day wasn’t going to defeat me. Just  the simple act of photographing my life, my inspiration on my iPhone.

This week I was contacted by the team at Project Life 365 thanking me for my support of the project and asking me to become a featured artist. Totally overwhelmed yet so very excited, I accepted the offer.
